About this place
A fragrant dashi built from dried bonito flakes and dried sardines meets tender, slender noodles that glide down effortlessly. Situated in Katagihara Hiratacho in Kyoto's Nishikyo Ward, Nozaki is an old-school noodle shop deeply rooted in its local neighborhood. From straightforward kake udon in clear hot broth to sweet-simmered kitsune udon topped with seasoned fried tofu, the shop serves up a gentle, unpretentious flavor that makes for an easy everyday meal.
Curry udon dishes that draw on the richness of that same dashi have earned their own loyal following. Thick, comforting broths feature in options like niku curry udon—layered with beef and green scallions—and a rich beef tendon curry. On cooler days, piping-hot noodle pots are an appealing way to warm up, spanning traditional nabeyaki udon, spicy chige nabe udon, and curry nabe udon.
The kitchen’s donburi selection is just as broad as its noodle repertoire. Regular-sized noodle bowls can be paired with an affordable mini rice bowl, offering combinations such as oyakodon with soft-set egg and dashi, sweet-and-savory tanindon, and hearty katsudon. For something less conventional at a traditional noodle counter, Nozaki also prepares mapo don and mapo katsudon, offering a robust alternative when you want a substantial meal.
The dining area features standard tables alongside raised tatami seating, creating a relaxed environment suited to solo diners and families alike. While free parking spots around the premises make visiting by car convenient, guests should note that payments are cash only.
